I won’t be on campus // May 26

Dear all,
unfortunately due to my train being delayed, I won’t be able to be on campus on time for today’s session. However, this doesn’t mean that thinking about today’s topic cannot happen. My idea was for today’s session to talk about senses in general and speci
fically sight and whether or not it is the most important sense in religion.

When you come to campus and find other students there, discuss this:

How many senses are there? List them.
For each sense you found — give one or two specific examples of that sense at work in religious or spiritual practice. Be concrete. Not ‘prayer involves hearing’ — what exactly, in which practice, with which sense.
When you have enough, sort these examples into two columns. On one side: what the tradition TALKS about and WRITES about — the vocabulary, the theology, the imagery. On the other side: what the body is actually DOING in practice. Do any senses dominate so
mewhere?

And, if you have more time, read the verse of light from the qur’an in different languages and discuss how it connects to the topic of “senses”.

See you next week.
